Feb 26, 2016 this is a neat little lathe I was asked to design and build. it is used in the manufacturing of glass capacitors. much smaller than the scale I normally work...
May 01, 2019 Lathes are a common tool used for machining. There are several different types of lathes, including glass working lathes, woodworking lathes, and metalworking lathes. The basic design is the same for all three types. The lathe is either it’s own bench style platform, or a smaller version that can be placed on a table.
A glass lathe is different from a common metal working lathe or woodworking lathe. The glass lathe has two chucks that are mounted on the bed opposite from each other. These chucks are designed differently than metal working chucks. They are much lighter in construction since in glass work there is very little force involved.

Apr 02, 2019 For the cost of one lathe, everyone can have one! In September 2016 I took a class from Micah Evans and Stephan Pierce at the Pilchuck Glass School. I looked around for a lathe to fool around on and found my options limited. The cheapest domestic lathe comes in at $12,000. Import lathes are much cheaper but they seem to get mixed reviews.

Using a lathe is a traditional art form, and even something as beautiful and delicate as glass lathe turning can be produced in your own home by a keen hobbyist. If you would like to try glass turning for yourself, then you will be best served by taking a course at
Feb 11, 2016 Unlike many glass artists, Jack Storms likes his glass cool. Compared to more common melted glass blowing or molding, he turns his material cold, on a lathe. Besides needing additional time and expertise, this also required the artist to invent a cold-working lathe to begin with.
Not a glass lathe, but I really liked the design of this burner. It looks like each of the different tips can be rotated into position. The Edwards Model G 3 Glass-Working Machine. I came across a nice book called "Laboratory Glass-Working for Scientists", by A.J.B. Robertson.

Apr 21, 2016 I've gotten to the point where the new glass lathe design has gelled into the next incarnation. It uses the same foundation as the previous lathe with the most significant change being the drive and translation systems. There was a lot of unnecessary machining needed to get the two stocks rotating synchronously with a mechanical drive and still

A pint glass, for example, with its smooth, regular shape and length several times greater than the outside diameter is a straightforward exercise on a lathe. Not so on a machining center. A coffee cup, on the other hand, with its jutting handle and finger-ready hole, is impossible to turn.
The open top design can be manufactured as a 24″; 36″; 48″, 72″. 84″, and 96″ models are closed top designs. Washers can be made with 2, 4, 6, or 8 brushes.. Standard brushes are low-e brushes and come in 12″ segments stacked on solid stainless steel brush shafts that can be rotated for wear.
